About John Hindmarsh

I have dreamed of writing since I was twelve years old. My first efforts were – in pencil, of course – space operas engendered by H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. Over the years I have experienced a left-right brain conflict, with the logical 'let's earn regular income' side winning regular arguments against the creative side, especially given the traditional book publishing approach where the author is a very tiny attribute in an overarching corporate venture. Today the publishing scene is changing rapidly, driven by technology, so my first book is an ebook, published by Rexon Press.
My focus is on science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction, where speculative fiction is defined as fantasy with a science fiction context. Of course, I reserve the right to add or mix other genres.
My writing projects include the following:
Glass Complex Trilogy (of which Broken Glass book #1) encompasses artificial intelligence, star travel via jump points, and portals. The hero is under threat of death and endures assaults and murder attempts as he fights to defeat a fraudulent takeover of his home planet. Definitely speculative fiction.
Mark One is a thriller with a modest foundation in science fiction, to the extent that the main character is a clone with mixed DNA. Mark fights for survival against extreme religious pursuers intent on his assasination while he is sought by the US military group that funded experiments to artificially design soldiers. Mark will appear in a series of thrillers.
Ratty Tales is comedic with some serious undertones, as intelligent rats depart Earth in a rodent diaspora, leaving behind humans who are complacently ignoring the slow death of their planet. The theme is largely of rats fleeing a sinking ship, although they regard it as the first step in their plan to conquer the universe. It fits well within the speculative fiction genre. Ratty Tales is due for publication in September, 2011.
A Question of Identity takes a small group of military and space navy personnel and exposes them to a civilization based on a hive culture. There are some near-horror elements as they are overcome and then fight their way free, otherwise it is science fiction.
Firefly is about a young mage who was almost totally destroyed in a magical electronic blast while helping Nicola Tesla with his electrical and death beam experiments. Now, almost one hundred years later, the mage recovers his abilities and his life, with the assistance of a young woman. Definitely fantasy.
Zed is a somewhat arrogant and egocentric being from a parallel universe who attempts to take over another universe, only to be defeated by a protective squad formed by beings from a group of parallel universes. Or is he really defeated? Definitely fantasy.
Night Magic is about a solitary young man who commutes daily from Hoboken to New York City. He somehow finds himself involved in deadly nighttime adventures as he helps faeries against monsters and dreads from the netherworld. Fantasy.
Egg Mother is the first book of a proposed trilogy that tells the story of a star ship courier who survives a crash landing after a vicious ambush. Hunted by enemies and anxiously sought by the Princess whose eggs she is carrying, the courier takes refuge in a small village where she gives birth to twins. Her children befriend a dying alien being who is barely surviving in a forest pond. Fantasy.
My eBooks will be available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, other ebook resellers and Smashwords.
I am seeking pre-publication and indeed, pre-edit, readers for my book projects. Interested? Let me know.
